Comments Sought on Two Books

When browsing Amazon, I read about two books which sounded interesting, both by Eddie Ephraums, namely

Creative Elements: Darkrrom Techniques for Landscape Photography

and

Gradient Light: The Art and Craft of Using Variable Contrast Paper

I'd be interested to hear comments by someone who has read any of these.

Hi Thomas,

I have Creative Elements: Darkrrom Techniques for Landscape Photography; it is a very informative book. Eddie displays about a dozen or so prints (both before and after pictures) then gives step by step details on how they were created. He also lists detailed darkroom procedures, formulas for toners and developers and samples of toned step wedges for example. I recommend the book.

I haven't seen Gradient Light: The Art and Craft of Using Variable Contrast Paper, but if it's of the same caliber as the former, I'd get it too.

Regards,

Good books...I've got the latter Gradient light. Main thing with Ephraims is he is British and his chief philosophy if I may say so is that he advocates using Matte paper (Ilford) because he claims he sells more as people are always a bit iffy on photography as art so he makes it look more like art with toning etc...compare his discussion of craft with the best like Vestal's Craft of Photography.

I found both of them extremely useful and inspiring.
