Answers

This is the really first tragedy the family has had to deal with. The first tragic part is that the baby is dropped and injuried and baby Folasade's eventually dies of these injuries. Wole feels sorrow like never before and he believes the maid didn't do it like the rest of the family does.

In response to your first question let me pose one of my own... Why do we tell kids there is a santa claus and not tell them the truth? Or why do we tell them that someone is "sleeping" when they are dead? My guess is that they did it because it was a simple way to keep the poor kid from worrying and throwing a fit.
