CofG Caboose X-368

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Central of Georgia Railway Historical Soc : One Thread

I recently purchased a duplicate slide showing an old Norfolk Southern Rwy caboose, #368, painted and lettered as CofG X-368. The shot was taken in the train shed at Savannah, Ga. in December 1978. How long was this car there, and where is it now? Thanks!

Russell,

The X-368 caboose was parked in the old CofGa trainshed in Savannah for several years during the 1970s. It was in a fenced-in area on the rear track inside the trainshed, along with Wrightsville & Tennille 223 (CofGa 223) and Sylvania Central 103 (CofGa 403). I don't know when it was first displayed there, but it was probably in the early 1970s. That was probably the same time that 223 and 103 were moved from the roundhouse (just across Louisville Road) for display in the trainshed. I believe it remained there until construction began on the Savannah History Museum around 1985, which now occupies the old trainshed.

As far as I know, the caboose is still in Savannah, located behind the trainshed. I don't know how accessible the car is, as several small structures (related to the history museum) have been built in that area.
