Toronto, Canada: Hydro cable fire cuts power in North York

A smoldering underground cable caused the power to go out for 1,700 Toronto hydro customers in the Yonge St. and Finch Ave. E. area yesterday morning.

Just before 7 a.m., firefighters responded to reports of smoke coming from the ground at 175 Cummer Ave. They found a wire smoldering inside an underground junction box, which connects the transformer to the hydro pole.

The lights were out from Yonge St. west to Willowdale Ave. and from Finch Ave. E. north to Cummer Ave. until 8:30 a.m., when the power was restored. No one was injured.
