Story Filed: Tuesday, March 21, 2000 8:04 AM EST

MAR 21, 2000, M2 Communications - The computer network at Turku University, Finland has been the target of a massive and well organised denial of service attack.

Unknown perpetrators managed to overload and stop the university's mail services by bombarding its mail server with email messages from over a thousand machines located around the world.

According to the university the machines used in the attack were used without the knowledge of their owners.

The attack, which began in the morning of 20 March, was successfully fended off in the afternoon and by the evening the mail services were again functioning normally as the university had managed to separate the criminal traffic from the real traffic.

The attack, although directed at the university, mainly affected its main mail user group, the students.
