RE-BLACK OLD WOODSTOVE

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I PICKED UP AN OLD RUSTY CAST IRON WOODBURNER. BEST WAYS TO CLEAN... MAINTAIN? I'M SANDBLASTING AND USING A "WILLIAMS STOVE POLISH" TO START. I WONDER IF THIS WILL LAST WHILE IN STORAGE, TO KEEP FROM RUSTING? ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT INGREDIENT "CARBON BLACK" , I HERE IT NEEDS CAUTION? ALSO WHAT IS THE CAULKLIKE SEALER BETWEEN PANELS?

The caulk between the panels is "Stove Cement"

We bought a used soapstone stove and I used steel wool to remove the rust on the iron parts. We also use the William's Stove Polish but it does have to be re-applied now and then. I'm not sure how long it would protect from rust in storage though.

I used a little 'elbow grease' and a wire brush to remove the rust off of mine. (wear a face mask) Finished off with a Teflon sander. Found stove paint at the hardware store (flat) and the stove looked good as new! DO ALL OF THE WORK OUTSIDE! Also, you have to light a fire in the stove to 'cure' the paint-don't use damp wood! It smoked so much I called the fire dept., to tell them my house WASN"T on fire.
