Minnesota Tax Refunds May Be Delayed Filing With Paper Forms Will Be Less Efficient

Watch the WCCO-TV report ST. PAUL, Minn., Updated 1:30 p.m. CST March 22, 2000 -- If you've been waiting for just the right time to send in your income taxes -- you'd better not wait too much longer.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue told WCCO-TV that they will be working hard, but will have a difficult time keeping up with the number of returns coming in between now and April 15.

According to officials, this year's state income tax forms are longer and will take that much longer to process.

WCCO-TV learned that the wait for refund checks could be three times as long for people who are just now sending in their tax return.

The average wait for a refund check was about 30 to 40 days, and that might be extended to the end of the summer, WCCO-TV reported.

"We weren't appropriated more money to hire data entry people and the form was lengthened in the last year's Legislature," Matt Smith of the Department of Revenue said. "The reality is that we're trying to deal with a fixed resource and an expanding demand."

WCCO-TV reported that if you believe that you're going to get some money back on your taxes -- and you want it back as soon as possible -- you can do one of two things:

File your paper form no later than March 31. File your taxes electronically. With the electronic filing method, officials estimate you will receive your refund in about 10 days.
