Title: Fire destroys Downriver Manufacturing plant

TRENTON, Mich. (AP) -- Investigators were sifting through the rubble this morning looking for what caused a fire at a metal stamping plant Sunday night.

When firefighters were called to the burning Downriver Manufacturing plant about 8:15 p.m. Sunday, flames were shooting through the roof and sides of the building, Trenton Fire Chief Joseph Grutza said.

"We were concerned about the size of the fire when we arrived," he said today. "It was in a residential neighborhood. ... You would think it would be noticed earlier."

Grutza would not say whether the fire is considered accidental or suspicious.

Residents in a one block area north of the building were evacuated for about two hours until firefighters could determine that nothing inside the building would cause it to explode.

The building is a complete loss and most of the equipment inside was destroyed, Grutza said. It took about an hour for firefighters from Trenton and four neighboring communities to get the flames under control, but some hot spots flared up overnight.

Fire investigators were awaiting help from safety inspectors and engineers this morning to make sure the building wouldn't collapse while they searched for the fire's cause. Copyright ) 2000 Detroit Free
