Respect - or what?

Two interesting articles in the newspapers over the weekend.

In the Mail on Sunday Marc Overmars was being interviewed about his future - I think his Arse contract may finish this season. He was blathering on about how, although he enjoyed playing for the Arse, he felt the need to go to a top European club in Spain or Italy to complete his footbal education (sic!).

Then all of a sudden he is talking about his experience at Wembley after the 2-0 v the Toon. He said that to leave the pitch he had to walk with some trepidation through the defeated Toons fans. He recalls his surprise when they all clapped him, without reservation, and says how staggered and touched he was. He recalls it as a very emotional moment for him that captured all that was good about the game in England, and how he would love to play for such knowledgable and passionate fans. Unfortunately, we went on to spoil it a bit by saying he put the makcems into the same category.

The other article is in today's Journal and quotes our erstwhile deserting midfielder, Eggs Hamman. Like his manager, he was full of praise for the Toon performance on Saturday, and for the job BR has done. However, he goes on to suggest that we would like to return to Tyneside at some stage. He is quoted as saying " I will go back to Newcastle in the future because I had a really good season there and I enjoyed playing in the North-East. I'm still good friends with some of the boys there and I speak to them regularly. I expect Newcastle to play well against Chelsea next month and hope they make it through to the Final."

Is there more to this than meets the eye, or is Eggs just trying to damp down the stick he is likely to continue getting at SJP?

As for Overmars, I wouldn't mind seeing him get the chance to play for us. All of a sudden we seem to be getting a little respect. Could it be that a few more outsiders are thinking success could be just around the corner for us?

Perhaps Hamann is still in search of a club with ambition, success, and playing in Europe. You know, Liverpool might only make the UEFA cup next year. And only 3rd or 4th in the league...where's that? ;-))))
