When I download images from my camera file to the hard drive, the images get huge and I can't reduce the size. Any suggestions?

I assume you have a 2mp camera. Most any image editing software will allow you to resize your photos. Just make sure you dont save over the originals. Most viewers will fit the image to your screen so you can view the photo without scrolling. IrfanView and VuePro will do this and you can also resize them. Adobe Photo Deluxe that comes with a few cameras can also resize images.
