Why so much fire?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : R.E.M. : One Thread

Does anyone know if there is any particular reason for there being so many references to fire in REM's songs eg the one i love, wake up bomb, bittersweet me, star me kitten, oddfellows local 151, moral kiosk, star 69 and others. Are they secret pyromaniacs or something?

Michael Stipe had this to say Re. Document, Which had the sub-title "File Under Fire"....

"The Whole Album is about Fire. About everything you think about fire as being cleansing, something that destroys everything in it's path. Its an element thats everywhere, the metaphorical and allegorical interpretations of 'Fire' are endless."

MS to 'MUSICIAN' jan'88

Thought it might help....

bye,bye
