PROVIDENCE - More than 500 East Side families went without electricity Saturday night - some of them for more than 19 hours - after an underground power cable failed on Hope Street at 9:40 p.m. The cause of the cable failure was still not known late yesterday afternoon, according to Karen Berardino, a spokeswoman for Narragansett Electric. Power was restored to the final 15 families at about 5 p.m. yesterday, she said.
Most of the homes affected, Berardino said, were along Hope Street, and between Waterman and Power Streets. Other losses of power were reported in the Wayland Square area.
For 330 customers, the outage lasted a little more than two hours. Power went back on for another 110 customers at 6:15 a.m. By noon, all but 15 families had had their power restored, she said.
