MALAYSIA Airlines spent only 79.9 per cent of its total budget for Y2K programmes, way below what the airline had expected to spend, its executive vice president (Information Technology and Corporate Planning) Rodzlan Akib Abu Bakar said.

The national carrier spent RM83 million out of the RM104 million allocated for the purpose, he said in at a certificate presentation ceremony in Petaling Jaya yesterday.

At the ceremony, Malaysia Airlines chairman Tan Sri Tajudin Ramli presented certificates to 150 Malaysia Airlines' staff who were involved in the Y2K team.

"We attribute this to a very good project management.

"We undertook some of the work internally and kept a tight hold of the expenditure and things that need to be done," he added.

Earlier in his speech, Tajudin said the national carrier managed to save a "substantial" portion of the budget allocated under the Y2K programmes.

He also thanked the Malaysia Airlines' Y2K team for their effort in implementing risk management strategies to prevent and minimise Y2K- related problems.

He also said the airline will revise the position of the team in the next four to six weeks.

Malaysia Airlines' Flight Operations Decision Making Team was also named the best team and awarded RM2,500 and tokens of appreciation.

Recently, the team was awarded the "1999 Risk Manager of the Year Award" for their success in implementing the risk management strategies.

The team has formulated a comprehensive, structured and integrated risk mitigation programme to manage the millennium transition and maintain business continuity.

As a result, Malaysia Airlines' flights were airborne during the rollover from December 31 1999 to January 1 2000, and all reported no hiccups in the air nor on the ground.

The Malaysia Airlines' Y2K team was set up in September 1997 with just two people and later grew to a total 400 people comprising full- time and part-time personnels.

During the period, the team had to check more than five million lines of programme codes, over 1,000 suppliers and trading partners, over 3,000 front-end Information Technology devices and all airline destinations and airports to ensure that everything was Y2K- compliant.
