Why did Puddinhead Wilson seem so happy in a town where he was basically the village outcast?

I don't think that he saw himself as that. THe people were all friendly to him and it wasn't like no one talked to him. He wasn't really outcasted. He just made a bad first impression. They all seem to like him enough, he was just a fool for a while. After that, the name was more affectionate than anything.
