Plant Status Report

Spider...I've been watching the Plant Status Report since the first of the year, and I wonder what it all really means? I see that today there are 22 plants operating at 0 power, with another 11 operating at a partial percentage.

With so many plants at 0, is there any effect to the people living in those areas, as far as getting electricity goes?

Sorry if I seem uninformed...

There has not been a loss of electricity
because of the scrams this year. But there
is a lot of plants down for refueling, a lot
more than usual.

At the beginning of the year there were a
dozen scrams, then in February there weren't
any. Now they are picking up again. The
average in past years has been about 2 scrams
per month.

Scrams are dangerous in that they stop the
nuclear process all at once by dropping
cobalt rods into the core. They only do this
in an emergency. If they shut down for refueling
they do it slowly.

BTW, I'm not especially trained in nuclear
energy and have just picked this stuff up
in passing.
