Looking for recipee for goldenseal salve( homemade bag balm)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

A few years ago there was a recipee given by a woman who had sheep for a bag balm like salve made out of vaseline. It has goldenseal, pine needles, clover, hairry mullen, and a couple other herbs in it I can't remember. Does anyone have the recipee or can you please send me a copy via email? I had a friend who borrowed my countrysides and never returned them...one had the reicpee in it. Thanks...Suzanne Wilson

Suzanne -- My human midwife uses dry goldenseal powder on baby's cords to help them dry down nicely into belly buttons. If you can't get the right recipe, I would go ahead and try to whip it up using what you know. The straight goldenseal produced two fine belly buttons on my last two children!

That would be a great idea for other recipees for salves and such I am always interested in learning. I had thought about going ahead and trying to come up with some salve with what I remember of that recipee...it was just such a good one and I really like it. Thanks for your input. Suzanne

I have a few recipes for salves. I would not recommend using vasoline, though, (petroleum is not good) but beeswax.

Goldenseal Salve: astringent/disinfectant one part goldenseal one part myrrh one part echinacea Put herbs in crock pot and cover with about 1 cup extra virgin olive oil. Heat gently for 4 -8 hours. Strain. Can be used as an oil, or can be made into a salve: Heat oil with about a tablespoon of beeswax, just until wax is melted. Put in a good container, and cool. "part" is a relative term. If you want a lot of salve, use 1/4 cup, if you want a little, use 1 teaspoon. Add more oil as the herb amount increases. For one cup oil, I use 1 tablespoon of each herb.

St. John's Wort Salve: rashes, cuts, wounds, diaper rash, hemmorhoids 1 part St. John's Wort flower 1 part comfrey leaf 1 part calendula flowers make as above oil/salve.

a good web site for salves is Stony Mountain Botanicals. If you know of another site, pass it on! Mary

Our newest wonder drug here at the farm for goat udders (and one mean case of diaper rash on my friends grandson) is comfrey. Same idea as the recipe in the crockpot, but we did use vaseline. You can order vaseline through the Jeffers Catalog 1-800-jeffers, it is so much cheaper! Anyway this salve is great for rashes, jock itch, etc. Vicki

If I ever get a few extra minutes, I'll look through our old issues for the recipe for you. Jean
