WIRE:04/09/2000 09:05:00 ET British nuclear plant evacuated after gas leakLONDON, April 9 (Reuters) - Over 150 people were evacuated from a British power plant on Sunday after carbon dioxide leaked in the basement, officials said. But British Energy spokesman Bob Fenton told BBC radio the public had no need to worry and there was no risk of a nuclear leak from the plant at Dungeness on the south coast of England.
Officials said there was no danger to the reactor because the station had been switched off for maintenance since November.
Staff were evacuated to emergency assembly plants and fire engines rushed to Dungeness B, which was built in 1983 and has two reactors that produce 1,100 megawatts of electricity a day when in operation.
