Being a single mother isn't easy. You make mistakes sometimes and you learn what works and what doesn't. Lutie is doing the best she can with her limited resources and had set a fairly good example for her son.

I think that being a single mother would be very difficult. I think, in the beginning of the book, that she is mean to Bub because she is being too over protective with him. Everything she does, however, is for her son, but she also forgets that sometimes the best support she can give her son is her love and involvement in his l

I think that Lutie is doing everything in her power to give Bub the best life possible. The fact that she has made some mistakes, simply means that she is a human being. I think that it is really hard on Bub, but you have to see it from Lutie's point of view also. She recently was seperated from her husband (that cheated on her), after that she had to move in with her father and Lil. This was extremely hard for her. She finally couldn't take having Bub around her anymore so she moved out. Now she is fighting her hardest to keep him safe and do everything that she can to get him off the street. So I think that Lutie is an excellent mother and she doesn't get the credit or the breaks that she deserves.

Lutie is a good mother. With all the factors she is doing her best to keep her son safe and give him the best opportunities possible. Sometimes Lutie seems to be a bit mean to him and should lighten up but she is only doing things the way that she thinks is right. Also everything she does for and to him is out of pure love.
