Rio de Janeiro, Apr 12, 2000 (EFE via COMTEX) -- At least three people were killed Wednesday when a small plane crashed directly on top of two houses located near the Pampulha airport, in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, Fire Department officials said.

The dead were all occupants of the plane, which crashed shortly after takeoff striking two houses in the neighborhood of Sao Bernardo, located near the airport runway, said firefighters from the state of Minas Gerais, the capital of which is Belo Horizonte.

However, rescue teams have not confirmed media reports about the alleged deaths of three other people, who allegedly perished inside the homes.

According to the Estado news agency, the plane crash killed six people and destroyed two houses.

Pampulha airport, which is in the urban area of Belo Horizonte, was turned into a local airport for domestic flights by small planes after Minas Gerais authorities inaugurated the Tancredo Neves International Airport in the town of Confins, 39 kilometers (24 miles) from the capital. EFE
