mixtape/bootleg - any preference on tapes?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : wellyeah : One Thread

i use the Type II tapes for recording stuff off radio/Cds. i think they have a better dynamic range: tremble sharper and bass fuller, all in all more "definition".

well the only problem is, if you tape something over it, music from the previous run would be audible during quiet passages. can i get rid of that?!

any arguments for the typeIs? except that they're dirt cheap?

other advise for bootleggin'? such as "don't hop around too much or the tape will sound wobbly"?

weell....I'm not sure how to fix the "problem" about other music being audible. really, I have that problem sometimes. maybe if you turn it up louder than you recorded the last thing?? I tend not to record over things too often, but I have before and yes, it's not pretty at all!!

I've never really made bootleg copies of things..I mean, not of concerts or anything where I hide a tape recorder in my jacket or something. I have recorded off the radio before though and really the only problem with that is when the dj talks over the song at the end or does something stupid to ruin the recording!! I have bought bootlegs before. it's sorta fun to have those distraction noises in between though. makes it seem more unique...like something devious..to hear people 'whoo'ing and hollering in the background. I like crowd interaction on bootlegs. it's fun.

yeah, I know this was no help, but I felt like babbling.

ooo, i like the ambient sounds too. people going all crazy and cheering when the guys did a great solo. Hearing the musicians talking or going "hey, ho ooooooahh!" is golden. what i can't stand is people coughin' during quiet passages or between movements. that totally ruins music. and it happens in EVERY concert. the classical crowd is a bunch of consumptives, i suspect.

i use type II tapes for "masters" of my mixtapes and type I tapes for the copies i make for people. i would use type II exclusively but i can't afford it. that's just for mixtapes though.

for bootlegging... well, i've only done it once. my advice is: don't talk. i talk a lot during shows. and at the show i bootlegged (elliott smith last march) i kept requesting songs or trying to talk to elliott.. and well.. it's just EMBARASSING to listen to later.
