Oh, come on!!! If the thousands of Cuban-American protestors were treated like the protestors at the WTO in Seattle, this would already have been over. But of course, the Cuban-Americans are running things so no one gets shot with pepper spray or rubber bullets or slammed to the ground. It seems to me the WTO protestors were treated like dirt and the Miami Cubans like royalty.

Our government or a bunch of Cuban Immigrants who think they own Miami, if not the whole U.S.? High time we sent some hard ass military types down Miami way to kick ass and take numbers. While theyre at it, remove those frigging Cubans that are holding office and are in key positions, like Chief of Police. Im beginning to see why Castro wanted those assholes out of his country. Oh please! We are all descendents of immigrants in this country. Cuban or European or African. What's the damn difference. You sound like a bunch of racists.

And how many times have I heard bitching about "the government did this" and "the government does that" and "it's all a bunch of corruption". I, for one, think it's about time the citizens stand up to the tyrrants and corrupt officials, instead of just bitching and stewing about it.

You're correct about most of us being descendants of immigrants to this country. However, most of our forefathers/foremothers had to wait for the legal documents to be completed, acceptance issued, etc. before they left their native country. Folks all over the world are on waiting lists HOPING to be accepted for entry. In contrast to those folks, are those who simply SHOW UP and somehow think they're in a game of "Finders...keepers!"

What ever happened to those Haitians who were detained in Florida some time back?

Janet did not ask for the kid.

Janet offered a free ride to a private retreat for the entire family where they could sit down with the father and talk it out without the government interfering. Whatever they agree to together would be accepted by the government.

Janet left Miami via Ft. Lauderdale today without the kid or the Miami relatives.

The judge said that everyone including Janet was enjoined to make sure that the kid does not leave US territory before his appeal was heard in court.

The kid cannot go to see his father at the Cuban ambassadors residence or the Cuban Embassy because they are considered to be part of Cuba.

Ergo, the family would not travel to DC so the kid could meet his father at a private retreat, as offered by Janet.

Can you say military base? I knew you could!

This is a tough situation, my hearts with the Miamians, the Cubans, but a father is a father, and that should be respected if he's a decent man. I would put "blood" before politics, not draw blood because of politics....

From my understanding of the case, there is no proof that the "father" is really the "father".... they divorced 2 years before the boy was born... this won't come out in main stream news as it would undermine the administrations "sucking up to Castro" policies, but you can bet the Miami Cubans know it :-)

Believe me, they have covered EVERYTHING in So. FLa. We are sick of it!

A DNA test is probably not far off, but the problem is that the Miami family would then not be related to the boy either. If it was proven he wasnt the father, of course.

the court issue right now has to do with empowering the INS to exlude minors from the same rights of political asylum that adults enjoy.

A judge made a ruling in that regard, and they must now convene a three judge panel to review that decision. Frankly, it allows to much power for the INS.

have you seen the video of the kid that the family released? What a silly thing for the news to air. They could have at least not had him eating candy while making the video!

Send the alien back. And if the cubans want to hold him hostage -- send them back too. I'm not a racist, but I believe in LEGAL immigrants. All the rest are a drain on our system.

So much so, that legal residents have few resources left. Just look at welfare reform and the non-lifer recipients that it removed from needed services. (handicapped, etc)

And, true to form they are protesting their rights? It seems whenever anyone dislikes a law in this country, they whine a little and the government doesn't enforce that law anymore. Everybody is looking for a loophole to jump through.

Elian is the property of the "state of Cuba", by Castro's definition. He will not be with his father for very long, if at all. He may be with him for a few months, perhaps a year, then off to state school, and the fields, harvesting sugar or tobacco, with "family" visitation once a month.

Sounds like a real good family life to me........(not)

Anyone heard about Arrianne Horta's daughter? The daughter she had to leave behind after an aborted first sailing? Ms Horta really wants to be re-united with her daughter. Gov't is ignoring her.

Shouldn't daughter's always be with their mothers, the same way "sons always should be with their fathers" in these cases?

I have to admit the coverage here on the left coast probably isn't as extensive as what you are going thru, and I'm sick of it too, but I haven't seen a thing about the divorce issue... from what you know about Cuba, would you want to bring your son back to that environment?... I know the US ain't perfect, but geezz!!!

He has an appeal on the docket in court that must be heard first.

Pending the outcome of that, it would be nice if they could stop with the discussions for hours on end between the 'talking heads' and any 'expert' they can drag in off the street!

The people in that neighborhood where the kid is staying have bot to be tired of it by now. If I lived there I would be livid that the police were not keeping the people out of there so that I could live in my own home in peace! I would be very intersted in seeing the permit for that public gathering!

I know a few people who live near, and they are extremely thankful that the family is not on their street!!! Can you imagine a mob outside your house for five months?!?! Not being able to get in and out of your home when you want or need to without a big hassle with the crowd?

And get this, the neighbors have to show ID to get in, and yet there is that friggin mob right there!

I saw on the news that they closed Flagler ST, which is the dividing street for north and south in Miami-Dade county. This is a major artery that many people use, and they closed six blocks of it, or so. How can they shut down a major road like that? It's not like there are a lot of alternates around there, unless you drive thru the neighborhoods, stop signs one after the other.

It really is a pain, and the news stations just continue to spur it on with the way they project the story.

If it was just the facts: US Attorney to come to Miami, see family, to arrange a trip to visit the dad in DC. Talks failed, she left. Judge rules to not remove kid from us soil. More as it develops.

That is what, a minute, two minutes? So what is this twelve hours a day crap? For five months?

It wouldn't surprise me if an attempt was made on the kid's life soon. Whether real or staged. What would the US gov do if that happened? Demand the kid for safe custody somewhere?

Ive always questioned the sanity of our policy regarding Cuban citizens. When did we initiate the law that grants any Cuban that sets foot on American soil automatic residency? Im sure that was done to tweak Castro but he must be pleased to see the turmoil we have brought on to ourselves. As usual, our politicians have dug a hole for many generations to come.
