"This scanner is only 18mths old and has not had much use ! Today when I scan, it seems to be OK until the moving unit reaches the front of the scanner and then the large back plastic gear that has the long belt and the motor ( small brass gear ) attached to it vibrates badly for a few seconds and then the moving unit returns to the rear !There are no missing teeth in the gears. I would be very greatful for any suggestions. Norman Howard"; It is an HP 5100C scanner.

Try cleaning the 2 guide rods with isopropyl alchool then apply a drop of watch or clock oil (Moebius).Do not use other type of oil since they have a tendency to stick with time. The clicking noise is caused by the slippage of the belt on its driving gear this is caused by the dryness of the 2 guiding rods and the carrier bushings. This treatment has worked well with me on two different model of HP scanners.Dry lubricants such as graphite or teflon could possibly work but may require a more thorough cleaning prior to application.
