Randi's remark

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

I've read through most of the comments since last night, and it seems no-one else has mentioned this, but it really shocked me. That is, Randi saying, "Did Lucy leave a forwarding address?" Especially right in front of Carter. I know there are a lot of diehard Randi fans out there, but it thought it was really crass. What do you all think?

Yes, I thought that it was pretty tactless, to say the least. *especially * in front of Carter. I wanted to smack her.

Why was it crass?

How would you have asked the question?

I think I would've given it to Greene, or whoever was in charge-- privately.

I just thought that it was odd or maybe even funny. Randi asks "Is there any forwarding address for Lucy?", I didn't think it was rude of her (that's Randi), I just thought it was kind of funny. Lucy is dead why would she leave a forwarding address? Does that make sense? ha ha. I shouldn't laugh, because it really wasn't a laughing moment. But, my opinion, I didn't think it was wrong of her to approach Carter.

I think Randi just meant do we have a forwarding address for her mail. She knows Lucy is dead, of course, so I don't think she was being rude about it. As for her asking it in front of Carter, she probably would have asked whoever happened to be standing there.

I think Melanie's right. I assumed she was asking who Lucy's mail was being forwarded to, not making a remark in poor taste.

I'll have to go back and watch the scene again on my tape, but I remember Randi's tone being flip and I thought that was over the line. As for a forwarding address...Lucy couldn't have left one, she didn't know she was leaving. And unless she got a lot of personal mail at the hospital, and I doubt that she did, why would the ER have a forwarding address for her? I usually like Randi but thought she went too far on this one. Maybe if Carter hadn't been there.

I agree that it could have been worded differently, or handled privately w/ Mark or someone else in authority...what she could have said was "Something came in the mail for Lucy. I suppose we should send it to her mother, does anyone know the address?"

But no one around (Carter, etc)seemed to take it as anything but a joke, so we'll forgive her.

Look guys, lighten up. Randi was probably just wondering if she should send the letter to whoever is handling Lucy's affairs. Besides, the folks in the ER aren't aware of how hard a time Carter is having yet - the symptoms are just beginning to reveal themselves. Remember, TV land is an obtuse place...

I don't think, Randi was rude about it, she inquired about Lucy slowly, walking and looking at it and then asking what she should do. The only thing I found insensitive was her persistent asking of Carter of who to contact and his obviously being upset about it while grabbing it from her hands. Of course the whole scene had to be done with Carter and not someone else, as to see his reaction, and Elizabeth was the perfect person to have there too, knowingly offering to take care of it, as it would be hard for Carter to alert whoever that Lucy is dead.

It is always typical Randi...and I loved her matter-of-fact "it seems he's giving her racial slurs" and "meatballs" comment about Mark's dad.

i dont think it was rude at all, as a matter of fact, she kinda winced when she said it, like she really didnt want to bring it up!! she doesnt really have a way with words, anyhow, LOL!!!

-- Alexis (lexicat1@webtv.net), April 15, 2000.

Thank you, Linda! You said exactly what I was thinking. If Randi could have known just how hard a time Carter is having, I'm sure she would have asked when he wasn't there, or at least been apologetic about asking in front of him. As yet, even the audience doesn't really know just how bad it is. We are just getting more of the big picture than the characters themselves.

Actually, Randi said, "Do we have a forwarding address for Lucy?" not "Did Lucy leave a forwarding address?" There's a difference. She wasn't being crass or rude or insensitive. She was asking rather reluctantly. She wasn't trying to be funny. The actually content of the sentence should straighten people out on whether or not Randi was being rude. There is a major difference is those sentences.

I totally agree with catherine! She was upset, anyone could see that, especially after she saw Lucy's chest being sawed open in AITF!

I watched it again and change my earlier remark, to some degree at least. The way she asked didn't bother me...her tone wasn't flip. I did have a problem with who she asked. Since Kerry was gone, I'd have hoped she'd have gone to Mark...not just whoever happened to be there. And I know Carter's hiding his pain from everyone, but--come on--they all know he was attacked too so why would she continue to press the issue with him? So, it still bothers me a bit, just not in the same way. And again I have to say this was a setup by the writers because I would think Lucy would have mail like that sent to her home, not place of business where it could easily be lost. If the letter hadn't gone to the ER though, we couldn't have had several of the scenes.

When Carter matched didn't all of the envelopes get delivered by hand to the med students? I remember Carter in some room (supply room?) with Harper when he got his letter. Also, it might have been that Randi went to whoever was around, but Mark had *just* walked by her and Elizabeth was standing there, but Randi still directed the question to Carter. I liked that she asked him, not just because it was an easy set up for a reference of Lucy to Carter, but also because she was his med student, so Randi asked him, because he knew Lucy best. I also liked how she asked about sending it to her "mother", and not sending it to her "parents"...she knew Lucy enough to know she only had a mother.

-- Elaine (mrsclooney78@hotmail.com), April 17, 2000.

There was also a sense of, "I want to take care of this for Lucy, not let someone else" from Carter. He would have *wanted* to be the one to find out about Lucy's proposed future.

-- Elaine (mrsclooney78@hotmail.com), April 17, 2000.

She said "Do we have a forwarding adress for Lucy?" and then "Should I send it to her mother?" NOT "Did Lucy leave a forwarding adress" She also seemed a little upset.
