SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Information from the files of 11.5 million taxpayers has been leaked from computers of Brazil's Internal Revenue Service and was sold to direct-mailing companies, Brazilian media reported Saturday.
The leak was confirmed Friday by the Sao Paulo Crime Laboratory, although it didn't say how the information got out, various media said without citing sources. The police were investigating.
The data reportedly was from 1998 tax returns and included the names, incomes, addresses, telephone numbers, activities and other information of 7.6 million individuals and 3.9 million companies. Among the personal returns were those of President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, media said.
Reports of a massive leak of tax files surfaced last November, when the Telefonica phone company told police about a newspaper ad offering data about the company. Police reportedly have charged four people.
