Ok, I tried your problem, and I put 4 for the period and it was right....maybe you are talking about the group #. The group #'s are listed on top of the periodic table. The group for Mn is not in the book since it's a transition metal. I asked my TA about this and she got it figured out. The group # for Mn is 7B. Maybe this is what you're asking.
