Do you think Elizabeth would do it? (Possible SPOILER)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

It seems many people think that the upcoming suicide will be David Greene. My question is, if it is David, and if he asked Lizzie to help him, or at least to stay out of it, do you think she would do it?

Maybe instead of suicide, she helps get David Greene into a hospice without Mark's "permission" or knowledge.

I have been thinking about this too, because I really feel they might be leading up to a David Greene suicide (or attempt). I think Elizabeth would follow his wishes if he tells her what he is planning and doesn't want her to tell Mark. She has always been one that would do as a patient wants. I don't think she would assist with the actual deed, but maybe she would prescribe him something that he could take ? It could be a very interesting storyline what with the new law in OR and other states contemplating this. And the idea of what it would do to Mark and Elizabeth's relationship could be very interesting to watch too. The writers do need to be careful with this storyline though, because if done poorly, it could turn the viewers off on Elizabeth. I guess we will see what happens in the next few weeks!

I was thinking about this some more...Does anyone know what the laws are in the UK or how society views doctor-assisted suicide there? Maybe it is not as much taboo there as it is here and therefore Elizabeth would have a different opinion of it. Just a thought. Mike the UK guy, if you see this let us know!

i doubt that david will be admitted to a hospice. mark really needs to spend time with his father. i think at the end of the season mark will realize he needs elizebeth to be there with him.

IMO, I don't think they would do another euthanasia case (i.e. Doug's case) and I don't think Elizabeth would go behind Mark's back, could you imagine how hurt/dismayed/angry he would be? And she knows it. I wish they would go back to the way they were around/before February. They were cute then, I don't buy them as a couple anymore. Elizabeth is not trying hard enough to support Mark and Mark is not letting her know at all what's going on.

Actually, (don't bite my head off! :)) I think Elizabeth has been a little unlikable in the last 3 episodes! She is really snippy with everyone!

I had an interesting thought. Carter can now write prescriptions. He and Lizzie are friends. Maybe he writes David Greene a script for high potency pain meds. That way, Lizzie doesn't acutally administer a leathal dose of any medicine. Mark wouldn't do it because its' his dad and Dr. Benton seems too "professional" to believe in euthanasia...just a thought.

I don't doubt for a second that Elizabeth would help David with ending it. I also don't think that Mark would question his Father's death considering his condition. Mark would assume that the disease had run it's course. Elizabeth would get away with it - until her conscience kicked in & one night after she and Mark realize they deeply in love with one another and are planning their future and living happily ever after - she has to look him in the eye and come clean...

I am not sure where the suicide spoiler came from, but I think that both suicide and euthanasia have been done on this show, and since there was already one death this season, they should lighten up a bit and move on. I am all for season ending cliff-hangers, but no more main characters dropping dead!

maybe, something crazy will happen. like she will become pregnant. ok , ok i know its highly unlikely, but elizebeth hasn't been her self lately. plus in real life ,i heard that alex kingston maybe wants a child.

Maybe this could be the answer to all our (well, my anyway) prayers!! Lizzie helps David die, and Mark, in anger and pain, tells her to hit the road. Hurt, she finds consolation in Peter's arms (even though I'd love to see her w/ Romano, I just can't see him consoling anyone) thus ending that horrid thing with Cleo, who is so devastated she laces some candies with cyanide and offs herself. Deb, remembering how far- out those chocolates were last time she stole some, has a few and collapses in a heap on top of Cleo. Meanwhile, Mark turns to the one person he's always been able to count onSusan Lewis, who hops on the next plane and confesses her undying love for him. Doug also returns upon hearing of David's demise, and realizing how much he's been missing, decides to stay and marry Carol. And finally, Romano, who just can't take seeing Lizzie back with Peter, shows up at Kerry's (a la Carter) to find her more than a little tipsy, and, well, you can guess the rest.

I'm one who thinks David should do what he wants, which is go into a hospice. He is not ten, he should be allowed to make his own decisions and Mark is denying him of that right.

I think that Elizabeth would help. She is very self-confident and would do what she thinks is right. Looking at it techinically though, Doug ended up resigning over, ultimately, a eustanasia case. Would they do that again?

Oh my gosh, what an unbelievably compelling idea! The fact is, Elizabeth seems to be resentful lately of people overriding her authority--Cleo, as well as Mark with the brain dead kid whose organs she tried to salvage. If David came to her of sound mind and said, "Be my doctor and help me do this," I think she'd be in the state of mind right now to agree to it. And since I'm all for Mark and Elizabeth breaking up, this would certainly be a legitimate reason.

I think this situation is very different from what happened with Doug last season. An adult asking for his terminal case to be brought to an end with dignity is not quite the same as a mother deciding the same thing for her son without his father's consent.

I've said this before...Mark has got to start listening to his dad or he's going to be sorry. What he said in "Match" about how his dad had cared for him as a child and now it was his turn to return the favor...it's a realistic, honest feeling that many in Mark's situation feel, but I really don't think that's how you repay your parents for raising you...and I think it stems either from a sense of overwhelming obligation or guilt. Caring for his dad has got to be hard for Mark, but if David commits suicide, Mark will have to realize that all his efforts were the exact opposite of what David wanted. Talk about guilt!

Maybe Carol's the suicide? She tried it before in Season One, why not again? Her life's not going the way she wants and we all know she's leaving so why not?

To Lizzie and Mark I'd quite like to see them break up, though I think that would really make Mark fall apart. Nothing's going right in his life either. Maybe Lizzie dumps him for Carter/Luka (hopefully not Benton. I don't like them together, though I hate this swarded Cleo thing. Ich) and he can't take it and commits suicide?

Then again maybe it's Carter? He's pretty screwed up right now. Ok, not very likely, he's not that kind of person and I'd hate to see him leave but I'm just considering...

I think Lizzie's got enough strength of character to help David on his way. SHe's got a lot of guts. Remember with that psyco killer guy who raped lots of girls? - she didn't kill him but she threatened to - "Tell me where the girl is or I'll let you die" then again when she gave him some morphine, she didn't kill him but she came close. Remember also when she made that mistake and gave some patient an overdose after a 36 hr shift? At the conference afterwards she rejected support from Benton and stood on her own two feet. She was so calm and confident. I think she'd certainly have the guts to do it and this whole Greene thing is definitely building up to something - but who knows?

Amanda, I'm from UK - hence 2 episodes behind you - and euthanasia is definitely taboo though many people support it. But Lizzie's got guts, she might do it.

-- Juliet (Vizzn@AOL.com), April 23, 2000.

i'm from the UK and although it is against the law most people i know support it.A lot of people go to prison on euthinasia charges. Also on an unrelated note i don't like the way ER steroetyped Elizabeth as the middle-class ENGLISH woman.I would like to see a Scotish or a Welsh doctor on ER.
