Bilby losing battle with Easter bunny

THE bilby's battle to take over from the Easter bunny has suffered a blow.

Coles Supermarkets will end its six-year Save the Bilby campaign after this holiday season. It is the latest development in the cut-throat chocolate war between the bilby and its traditional Easter rival.

It is a high-stakes fight, with Australians set to spend more than $185 million this year on Easter confectionery.

"The bilby has levelled out a bit," said Confectionery Manufacturers of Australasia's David Greenwood. "The bunny is fighting back."

Environmentalists argue Australians should support a native animal under threat rather than the rabbit a national pest wreaking havoc on the environment.

The Foundation for a Rabbit-Free Australia began the fight in 1991 to raise awareness of the bilby's plight.

Chief official bilby manufacturer is Haigh's, which proudly declares itself a bunny-free zone, but there are at least 14 other versions of the chocolate marsupial on sale.

Even with plenty of choice, consumers are still sweet on the bunny as their Easter favorite.

Foundation for a Rabbit-Free Australia deputy chairman Rob Morrison said most Australians were now aware of the bilby's endangered status, compared with a decade ago when nine out of 10 had never even heard of it.

"The Easter bilby is here to stay," Dr Morrison said.

Coles media relations manager Lisa Amor said the company decided its campaign had run its course.

"We have been supporting the campaign for the last six years," she said.

She said the supermarket chain would support a family-based charity next year.

Why the rabbit is doing the Hawk,

Who for once can hardly talk.

Do it faster the bird he did say,

Colored eggs I will promise to lay,

When youre done I will not even squawk.
