What's the best concert you've gone to so far?

Mine was The Cure, in the early 90s. I can't remember which year, but it was after high school and before I moved to Texas. It was also after I developed my full-blown attachment to the Cure in my freshman year of college, so probably 1991 or 1992. I'm thinking '92. Anyway, I loved that concert because I knew every last one of the songs they played; they played for a long time and then came back for two encores; the lighting was gorgeous. They had this curlicue cutout set thing at the top of the stage, so a lot of the time the lights were shining through that, casting shadows in varying patterns on the stage. They also did some amazing things with shining beams of light through swirling smoke. Lovely! That concert is one of the top moments I'd choose to relive if I could.

Easy: B.B. King at the Roseland Theater here in Portland. It was the third time I'd seen B.B. live and it was hands-down the best. The Roseland is a small, rather divey venue -- seating is represented by portable chairs (mostly ignored), the stage is just a platform about 3-feet high, and no matter where you are in the house you're never far from the stage. Elizabeth and I made a point of arriving early, so we were close enough to see the King of the Blues sweat on the front row.

B.B. is the epitome of the gracious, seasoned performer -- relaxed and personal and connecting with the audience on every important level. And you can really see, especially that close, that he's *into* the music, even the old signature tunes that he's been performing for thirty years seem to still mean something to his performance.

What made the concert extra fine was the audience -- made up largely of folks not there to be seen or affect faux hipness, but long-time B.B. fans and blueshounds grooving to the playing and that voice and those tunes. I got the feeling that B.B. adjusted his performance up for his "tribe" as opposed to just another big stadium audience.

The thrill ain't gone.

I've been to some great TMBG concerts. But my all time favorite concert so far is Garbage's Version 2.0 show. I knew all the songs and I even memorized the play list. I rattled it off to my friends after the concert.

Garbage really knows how to rock and put on a great show. Of course, it's nearly impossible to understand Shirley Manson when she speaks, due to her outrageous Scottish accent.

The Pixies

They played at a club (the living room) in Providence in 1989 (i think). It was packed like sardines, and the mood was electrifying. the entire crowd was totally alive, and because we were so packed in, we were one huge crazy swarm moving in unison from side to side.

you could lean so far over that you would normally have fallen, but because there was someone right there...IT WAS GREAT.

it was also very hot and sweaty, but the music made that ok. i have never again experienced anything like it... plus i was only 15 or 16 at the time, and if i hadn't known the bouncer i wouldn't have been able to go inside...

that made it extra special. i live for days like those.
