Closet Space

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I noticed in another thread that a lot of you lack closet space. Our 1920 farm house had the same problem, which the previous owners solved for us. It may give you some ideas. One small bedroom has a small closet built under the stairway. One larger bedroom has a free-standing closet in it, not built to the ceiling, no back on it but you can move it. Another large bedroom has a closet built out into the room, to the ceiling, not moveable. They also built a closet along a wall instead of a sloped ceiling/knee wall in the same room. We have pegs in the mud room (still trying to get the children to use them!) for coats & jackets. It took me a while to get used to having closets like these (I was dreaming of armoires) but I did. Hope this helps!

Those are all good, and here's another. My daughter's bedroom used to think it was a walk-in closet and a hallway, but now is a room. She now sleeps in a loft bed, and below her mattress is her closet. I secured a rod to the bed frame, and sewed a coordinated curtain to keep dust off and for appearances. She also has two big storage boxes for shoes and sleeping clothes.

Rachel: What a neat idea! If we get the farm we are trying to buy, I think I will do that for my grandaughter, or if not, for a spare bed for the grandson to sleep in when he visits. There is a long narrow back room I was considering turning into a sewing room, but one end would make an ideal loft/closet arrangement. Jan
