Title: NIE ADDRESSES POWER SUPPLY PROBLEMS IN THE BURREN AREA

Author: Group Communications Date: 20/04/00

Senior Managers from Northern Ireland Electricity have met with representatives from Newry and Mourne District Council and members of the Burren Community Association. This follows a number of recent incidents when power supply was disrupted to customers in the Burren area near Warrenpoint. Local Customer Service Centre Manager Paul Mullan and Colin Fallon, Managing Director, NIE Customer Service met with the Council on Thursday afternoon to explain the companys response, which includes accelerated refurbishment work to begin in May 2000. Paul Mullan said: In September 1999, NIE announced a major #9million investment to refurbish and reinforce the electricity network in the Newry and Mourne area, including the Burren area of Warrenpoint. This project, which will last 4 years, has already begun, but unfortunately our customers in Burren have not been able to gain benefit from the work done to date. This situation is not acceptable to NIE, and we fully understand the frustrations of customers in the area. This section of line was due to be completely refurbished later in the year, however, due to these problems experienced, we have been able to bring this forward and work will now commence in May 2000. To acknowledge the inconvenience caused to customers by the repeated outages over the past few months, NIE will be making a one off goodwill payment of #50, which will be credited to customers accounts, appearing on forthcoming bills. ends Issued by Olivia Johnston Group Communications Tel:02890 689308
