Best I can tell, my ancestors came to America from Saarland, Germany.I understand that today there is still a place called "Schwingel House" there...a kind of boarding house.
I will post more as I get it. Anybody else?
Hey Olaf,
What does "Schwingel" mean in German?

Hey Duane !
Thank you for your email. It is nice to hear from you and I will write an answer of your question with this email. The word Schwingel has no ordinary meaning in german, but I leaned in my biology-lessons that Schwingel is a name for a special kind of grass. My teacher told me something about red-schwingel and green-schwingel. Some farmers used this grass for their plantation.
It is right to say that our name is coming from farmers. But it is still a question why we call us schwingel. Probably were these farmers important and sucessful people in the past.
looking forward to hear from you
