Wood Pallet Ideas

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Does anyone out there have any ideas on how to use wood pallets? Our local newspaper gives away these pallets and I want to use them for building something. I know they are good for firewood but I'm sure there has to be other ways to use them (like maybe outdoor furniture or something?)I'm SO glad I found Countryside magazine a few years ago. I have gotten so many ideas from readers on moving toward the self sufficient life. It's slow but I'm gettin' there. Thanks for any ideas.

We built a 10 x 12 chicken coop with them a few years back. He framed it out with 2 x 4's and used those as siding. They are really hard to pound a nail in so we pre-drilled holes. It really cut down on the expense of the coop! We also made a compost ben out of them, leaving air space between the boards. You could even make a "lean to" if you wanted. We did paint our boards once they were up though. That's been at least 5 yrs ago and still no problem rotting or aging.

we have build chicken coops, goat pens, sheep pens, birthing pens in our sheep barn, We have stood them on end and cut then to a point and made garden gates. If you can think of it you can build it. Keep in mind some are very hard to nail into

They're good for building compost bins too. Just tack some chicken wire over them before assembly.

And with a little carpentry you can make a decent dog house too.

I saw one guy took them apart (the good oak ones) and made beautiful guitars out of them I don't have that talent but it goes to show! Shaun

I just got through making two small greenhouses with some large ones. They are 8' x 8' and I have four. I just leaned two together "tent style" and nailed them together at the top and added some cross pieces at one end. Also, one cross piece at the open end at the bottom. I plan to cover one with plastic leaving one end open or attach a piece that can be rolled up. On the other, I will plant green beans on each side to create a shade and have spinach and lettuce inside. Since I'm at 3500' it will be a great help to my shorter season. It was so easy and fun that I'm imagining what I'll do when I get my hands on some more. The kids want to use some to build a fort. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination! Have fun!
