How did Mile Rock get its name?

Richard, That would be interesting to know, since the Mile Rocks Lighthouse, or whatever amputated structure is left, is only half a mile from the shore. Perhaps the name indicated that ships should stay a mile away from the partly submerged rocks, in the middle of the inbound shipping lane, a mile away in safety...

Mile Rock is a mile south of mid-channel of the main shipping lane into the Golden Gate.
