Yeast Quantities

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Bread.com FAQ : One Thread

I have been purchasing yeast at Costco in a large quantity bag but don't know what measurement is in a small package, therefore, don't know how much to use from the lg quantity. Is the small package a tablespoon? teas.? Never know how much to use if recipe calls for a pkg of yeast.

Also, will this larger quantity of yeast last in the freezer for a long time?

Sally,

1 pkg of yeast = 1 Tablespoon of yeast. I've had the confusion of trying to find out as well (in fact, I >just< found the answer!). I'm not sure about the freezing time, though. I'm not sure how long ago you asked the question. I hope this helps.

Dry yeast will keep in the freezer a very long time IF you put it in an air-tight container. I use a glass jar with a tight lid. Then I take out a small amount and keep in the freezer for a month or two. I do let it warm up to room temp. before putting it in the bread machine. Works great.
