Local Hero

The return of "Local Hero" today was one of the most significant and happy events on a very happy day.

United must never again get rid of this. It's a beautiful, stirring piece of music and it made my day to hear it again. I don't know who was responsible for it ever being deselected but any one who doesn't like it is tone deaf and has less taste than a cup of water. I know these things are subjective but if you disagree you are wrong. (-;

It was nice to see 2 of our very own local heroes today with Al blasting a fantastic free kick, getting the assist for the first goal, and otherwise having a great game. Bobby Robson clearly enjoyed the lap of honour at the end. Speaking of local heroes, Warren Barton should by now have become an honorary Geordie and he is certainly a hero. A superb display at left back - the man has the heart of a lion. Several of us spoke today of him as a possible manager. If he can motivate others half as much as he motivates himself then he will do very well.

Marvellous day. Great game, and the devotion of the Toon Army never more in evidence. Probably, nay, certainly, the finest fans anywhere. I'll miss them during the dry season.

I thought the great bit was after the lap of honour and they were all going down the down, they started playing Cliff Richards' "We're all Going on a Summer Holiday" - Class......pure class.

I was with a little knot of comrades at the back of the Leazes soaking up the final moments after the stadium had cleared. Lots of handshaking and embracing as we're all spread to the four winds next season when the bairns take over our part of the stand. It was glorious just to sit there with as great a bunch of people as you will ever meet.

Anyway, the stewards started shouting up at us to please b*gger off so that they could go home, we responded with a rousing chorus of:

We shall not,
We shall not be moved!"

The final moments of a memorable season, and the last stand of the Leazes-enders. We left wreathed in smiles, and the stewards thought it was pretty funny as well.

Agreed Jonno. It brought a tear to my eye to hear it again. Apparently Gullit got rid of it but own own local hero YBR has returned it to its rightful place.

I remember writing in the mag a year a go or so about Local Hero. It hits a chord like no other music I've ever heard. When ever I hear it all th haiirs stand up on my neck and my heart misses a beat. I'm so happy that it's been returned to it's rightful place. Local hero? I can think of about 36,000 of them.

La, la-la
Tum-ti, tum-ti, tum tum tum,
tddle-ing,
Tiddle um ti-tum ti-tum,
la da la la la la laaa la la etc

Funny how nobody was heard to remark: "Oh no! I wish they'd play that bit from Carmina Burana and stop just before it got to the good bit and instead shift bewilderingly into the toshy bit from some Fat Boy Slim record..."

Thanks for that Softie. I didn't know the words so now I can sing along (as well as playing air guitar) (-;
