What is the best episode of ER ever?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

I just saw "Fevers of Unknown Origin" from Season 2 on the Sunday night reruns this week, and I think that was the best episode I've ever seen. Or one of the best. There were so many good plot twists - Dr. Benton getting Resident of the Year, then finding out he was nominated by Dr. Vucelich, Susan's flashbacks and the way we had to wait until the very end to find out what the flashbacks were about, Shep falling apart, etc. There are lots of episodes that have memorable or funny moments, but this was one where I liked the whole thing. I love watching the reruns. In some ways, I think the show was better then - it had better characterization & plot lines, etc.

Anyway, what is your favorite episode or memorable moment? Another favorite of mine was when Deb Chen was on there in Season 1 and she ate 2 pieces of the Valentine's candy the high school guy had brought in, and they were laced with LSD. She didn't know it, and walked around all day high and spaced out. At the end of the day she was licking the icing off a cupcake really slow and deliberate, and Malik & Jerry were looking at her like "WHAT is she doing?" That was hilarious to watch.

There are so many episodes I love, and I'm sure as other people post theirs, I'll remember more, but here's my list:

All in the Family- for the obvious reasons. Feb 4, 95- I love how they steal the crash carts, really shows the togetherness of the staff. Also, one of my favorite dialogues of all ER's happens there when Mark in the helicopter. "Hell of a life!" "What?" "Hell of a life!" "Huh?" "I said I want to have sex with your wife!" Such Sweet Sorrow- maybe cuz it's this week's, but I love it so much. Everything Old is New Again- beautiful epi A Shift in the Night- AWESOME! Both Storms, cuz they're just great.

There are still a few I've yet to see, but that's my list for now!

My current favorite (it changes all the time) is A Shift in the Night

-- Casey (steinbec00@netscape.net), May 17, 2000.

My top five: - All In The Family - Great Expectations - The Healers - Blizzard - Such Sweet Sorrow

-- JLS (ewwhatevr@aol.com), May 17, 2000.

Joanne, you're right about the line with Mark & the other guy in the helicopter. I had temporarily forgotten about it, but that was hilarious. Especially when, after Mark said "I want to have sex with your wife," the guy smiled and gave him the thumbs-up sign because he totally did NOT understand what he just said because of the noise!!

-- Melanie (msintn@hotmail.com), May 17, 2000.

Maybe not the best episodes ever, but certainly my favorites include: 1) Blizzard, 2) Days Like This, 3) The Healers, 4) Night Shift, 5) All in the Family, and SSS is climbing up there...I'm sure there are some others.

I was surprised no one mentioned "Exodus"--if I had to pick just one, I think that would be it. . . it didn't have the sentimental value of "All in the Family", "SSS" or "Great Expectations", but plotwise it ROCKED!

-- joy (joygirl01@yahoo.com), May 17, 2000.

Joy, Exodus was on my list and when I came back from researching the season, I found you had added it! Here's my favorites: from Season 1: Love's Labor Lost, Season 2: The Healers and A Shift in the Night, Season 4: Exodus, Season 5: The Miracle Worker (Christmas epi) and Middle of Nowhere, and from Season 6: Be Still My Heart and All in the Family. I don't have a Season 3 but might later when I've seen them again. I've been watching Seasons 1 & 2 on reruns and of course have seen 5 and 6 recently, so 3 and 4 are in the dark recesses of my mind right now (but Exodus still stands out!).

-- Diana (dilynne@juno.com), May 17, 2000.

The episode Exodus from season 4 rocked!!! The plot was fantastic. I think ER needs to have more of these hospital disaster episodes. All In the Family was great too:probably my second favourite episode. I had exodus on tape, but that tape has completely disappeared and I have no idea of its whereabouts. I live in the UK, so we don't get TNT re-runs. Could anyone send me that on tape? I'd provide a tape and i'd pay for postage and packaging etc. E-mail me on privyet001@aol.com if you could help. Thanks!

"Such Sweet Sorrow" is definately up there, as are both "Storms." "Great Expectations" blew me away, and I'll never forget "Love's Labor Lost," "The Healers," or "Hell and High Water." "One More For The Road" I LOVE -- the porch kiss will always be one of my favorite "ER" moments. "Union Station," "Fathers & Sons," "The Peace of Wild Things"...The Doug/Carol fan in me loves "Do You See What I See?" Aah! There's so many episodes to love!

-- Arianne (CarolRossSusanGreene@yahoo.com), May 17, 2000.

My definite favorite episode of all time is "One More For The Road". That kiss was just amazing. No doubt the best kiss ever on TV. Then "Sleepless in Seattle" because that whole scene with Doug and Carol was so sweet. And then would be "Something New" and then "Such Sweet Sorrow. As for memorable moment, that would probably be the scene in "Fire in the Belly" when Kerry is reviewing the tape of all the traumas pointing out everybodys mistakes, and then rewinds too far and shows the scene with Mark talking to Doug about his sexual insecurities and admitting the only he had slept with was Jen. I was on the floor when I saw that.

My top 6 are- All In The Family- Great Expectations- Such Sweet Sorrow - Union Station- The Good Fight - The Storm Part 1 & 2

-- Stephanie (ERGirl22@aol.com), May 17, 2000.

I agree w/all those episodes everyone has already mentioned, especially Exodus. The plot was pretty well-written; but remember that scene near the end after everything is taken care of? All is quiet; the camera moving around the empty, temporarily abandoned ER, and then the camera stops at the doors at the end of the hall. Then Carter bursts through, and the bustle of the ER is back again, w/Carter in charge. I don't really know why, but that scene has always thrilled me whenever I watch the reruns or tapes of it. All In The Family, I must agree, was/is a very powerful episode. This epi had many gut-wrenching scenes, one being Lucy's whispered "thank you" to Elizabeth; when Carter fell to the ground and saw Lucy, all bloody, lying there on the ground... As well, I enjoy those episodes when they're featuring basically one (or two) main character(s) in it, like The Long Way Around, Middle of Nowhere, The Good Fight, Fathers and Sons, Family Practice...any more? I find them refreshing, and I can also see the actor(s) perform on their own (or mostly on their own) And then there's Love's Labor Lost, which was pretty good, too. Of course, being an avid follower of the DR/CH romance, there were all those episodes w/the good bits, the parts that gave us just another glimpse into the personal lives of our (or at least my) fav ER couple; those tidbits of cuddling, embracing, a heartfelt kiss or a meaningful conversation. Don't y'all just love those? Esp SSS! That is definitely one of my most memorable events, that last scene of the epi. Alright this whole reply was basicaly irrelevant mater but I still had fun recalling all those episodes I've watched. Sorry for such a long reply, everyone!

-- Jo (chinge05@saucerville.com), May 17, 2000.

That question is almost impossible to define. For many different reasons mine are (in no particular order) "Love's Labor Lost" for the emotion; "Exodus" for showing how strong Carter can be; "The Healers" and "All In The Family" for showing how those who take care of other humans feel about their co-workers; "The Storm 1 & 2" for great directing ("Be Still My Heart" comes close here); "Be Still My Heart" for THAT song and the emotions it still emits; "Such Sweet Sorrow" for the best romantic reunion ever. "Shift in the Night" for Mark's strength of character.

I could go on and on, but I'm sure you'd get bored, so I'll end here for now :~)

I just saw a "Shift in the Night" for the first time tonight (taped it off of TNT) and I have to say it was the best episode I saw so far, but I haven't seen any of season three or four yet. I am new to ER been catching up on it on TNT and all I have to say is what a great show! The most moving episode I remember is from season five ( title?) with the car crash involving the kids going to the prom and the one victim being burned so badly that they had him speak to his parents by phone before they tubed him, because most likely he wouldn't recover and be extubated.

-- SB (SB @aol.com), May 17, 2000.

I of course haven't seen every epi and got into this show season 5...but I like "When the Bough Breaks" it was the first epi I ever saw -- it was powerful...it took me a while to fall asleep that night! The pilot -- OF COURSE -- classic. I like "All in the Family." and Such Sweet Sorrow was amazing and all...but as a stand-alone, without the excitement of George, it was mediocre, ya know? anyway...Everything Old is New Again, Love's Labor Lost (did anyone mention that?) ... so many...I haven't seen Union Station yet! Poor me!

anyway, this is an interesting thread.

My favourites have got to be The Storm 1 and 2. There was just so much going on all over the place in those episodes... moral dillemmas, ethical questions, Doug's choices, and who can forget Kuby and Mobilage? I could've done with out the lucy and Carter moments, but it was all in good fun so....

I also liked The Good Fight, more for the character development than the actual condition of Corinne. I think Carter came back to his orginal self during season 5 in that eppy when he went to take care of that women with TB, and how sweet he was with the little kid sitting on the steps. I remember episodes for the little things.

And Sticks and Stones.... Mr. Kornberg was so hilarious, and Carter was so hot during the paramedic ride along. The last scene where Carter has to tell Zadro about Lars was touching.

And I think my favourite from season six, amazingly, is Truth and Conseqences. I don't know why, since obviously some of the other ones like BSMH and AITF and SSS have been more touching, but everything sort of flowed in T&C, and I just loved it.

Some of my early favourites are probably the season 1 finale, esp the end scene with Carter walking out of the ER; and Who's Appy Now was great, and so was the eppy where Carter had to revive Chase.

My top 5 favorite episodes (in no particular order) are: 1)24 Hours (the pilot) 2)Everything Old is New Again 3)Love's Labour Lost 4)Be Still my Heart 5)The Blizzard If I had to pick a #1 favorite, it would have to be Everything Old is New Again. (I'm just glad Carol didn't marry Tag)

-- Carin Haseltine (cdenisehaze@usa.net), May 17, 2000.

I would have to say, season 6: All in the Family, Such Sweet Sorrow, Humpty Dumpty (I don't know why, it's just cute) and hopefully next weeks! s5: Nobody Doesn't Like Amanda Lee (Carter was NICE to Lucy), The Good Fight, s4: Carter's Choice, Do you see what I see, Gut Reaction, Exodus; s3: One More for the Road, Dr. Carter I Presume; s2: Hell and High Water; s1: Everything old is new again. That's a long list!

SB, the show you're talking about is Responsible Parties...excellent show.

What happened in "Exodus?" If that was in Season 4 I probably saw it, but I can't remember.

My favorite Christmas episode so far is "A Miracle Happens Here" where the lady who was a Jewish death camp survivor was in a wreck with her granddaughter & they thought the baby was kidnapped, but later the police found her and the family had Hannukah in the hospital. I'm not Jewish, but I thought that was a nice scene. Of course, with the way TNT has skipped the Christmas episodes I never saw the ones from Season 1 or 3.

-- Melanie (msintn@hotmail.com), May 17, 2000.

Interesting thread...needless to say, I had to go through a few episode summaries before I could decide -- because I can never remember the titles!! I think my favorite is "Exodus". Someone mentioned earlier the scene where the ER is totally empty, and then everyone starts coming in and "hitting the reset button". That scene resonated with me as well. Also, I'm very glad that people are mentioning "A Shift in the Night" (this is the one that I had to check the title). I just love how Greene and Carter just take to that waiting room at the end -- quickly, fairly effortlessly, but yet they were kind to the patients as well. As for this season, I have to agree with "All in the Family", just for the intensity of the situation, and the way everyone reacted to the tragedy. Finally, I have to admit that that the last 5 minutes of "Such Sweet Sorrow" got to me -- I've never been a D/C fan in particular, but I was extremely happy that they were able to give a sweet closure to this story.

-- Amy (jocelyn@mtco.com), May 18, 2000.

Jo, you're right about that last scene in "Exodus"--it makes me cry every time I see it!

In case anyone is interested, I just thought I'd throw in that the reason TNT skips the Christmas epis is b/c they showed them all in order the week before Christmas.

-- joy (joygirl01@yahoo.com), May 18, 2000.

BUT they could show them in order and then show a week of Christmas epis during the season as well. This has been discussed over and over though and so many people have written to TNT and they haven't listened so...oh well.

After reading this list, I wish TNT would have a viewers' favorites, letting people vote for their favorites and then showing the top 5 one week! Wouldn't that be cool?

-- Diana (dilynne@juno.com), May 18, 2000.

I'm adding "May Day" to my list above!

-- Diana (dilynne@juno.com), May 19, 2000.

I know this is late but I read all the new messages. I dont have a fav epi but would just loke to make a comment. I have noticed so many people seem to miss the earlier seasons of er yet almost everyone here has said 1 or more from this season as one of their favorites maybe b/c this year IMO the epi have had more emotional and sentimental value. Just thought that was somewhat odd

-- bridgette (Bridgette713@hotmail.com), July 22, 2000.

My favourite episodes are "24 Hours", "Chicago Heat", The Gift" and "motherhood" from the first season. "Summer Run", "Do One, Teach One, Kill One", "What Life?", "And Baby Makes Two", "Hell And high Water" "Fires In The Belly", Fevers Of Unknown Origin" and "Take These Broken Wings" from the second season. "Let The Games Begin", "Ghosts" and "Fear Of Flying" from the third season. "Day For Night" and "Rites Of Spring" from the fifth season and "Survival Of The Fittest" From season seven. I believe that ER achieved perfection in the first 3 seasons and has only occasionaly been able to recapture the sheer brilance of its glory days when the writing was so fresh and original. The best ER episodes of absoulte all time are the ones above and the following two episodes: "Loves Labors Lost" and "Union Station" because the emotion of the characters was so well potrayed. I think I cried for about a month after I saw "Union Station" because I felt so sorry for Mark and I missed Susan so badly, I you can't tell from my fave eppys list I am a HUGE Susan Lewis fan and ER is just not the same without her mabye in season 8 we can see a return to the good old days of ER because if you were one of the about two people who didn't alredy know Susan is coming back!

-- Jacqueline Hope (kobi@acay.com.au), June 30, 2001.

My absolute favrite episode is: Great Expectations, I love Carol Hathoway and this episode totally brought out my fear for her.
