PFL Selext XI 0
Newcastle United 1

NEWCASTLE won the first of their two West Indies tour matches, courtesy of Kevin Gallacher's second-half goal, writes SIMON RUSHWORTH.

The Scotland international met a Paul Robinson right-wing cross with a diving header in the 52nd minute to settle a tightly-contested game against a select side from the local professional league.

Gallacher came closest to opening the scoring for the Magpies in the first half, his eighth-minute effort following a cross from Andy Griffin being saved by Michael McCombie.

Eight minutes later St Kitts and Nevis international striker George Isaac had a chance for the hosts, but Warren Barton and keeper Shay Given combined to clear the danger.

Then, in the 16th minute, Kerwin Jemmott had a 20-yard shot saved by Given. In the 38th minute the Newcastle keeper was called upon again, making a superb reaction save to deny dangerman Isaac.

The PFL Select side remained competitive in the second period, but Gallacher popped up to give Newcastle victory.

United now move on to neighbouring Tobago to meet an island XI at the Roxborough Complex on Sunday (9pm UK time).

Goalkeeping coach, Simon Smith, was on the bench for last night's match.

Perez' career takes another turn for the worse as BR leaves him behind to register on a hairdressing course as the only avenue open for him now - still hansomely paid by NUFC, of course!

That answers the question I posed elsewhere. Thanks, Clarky. Guess I should read all the posts before putting up a new one. :-)

Anybody know how we got on today at the beach footie comp in T&T? Should just about be finished now (unless it's gone to penalties!)
