Ming Na's Character

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

Ok, this may sound like a really stupid question but what exactly is Ming Na character's name?? Every episode it seems to change, Jing Mei, Deb, Chen... Also does anyone happen to know when Season 7 will air in the UK?? It is greatly appreciated! Thanx

Vicki, her real name is Jing-Mei Chen. (Or if you are being strictly correct, Chen Jing-Mei. Asian cultures often put the family name first.) Chen is her family name. However, in season 1, as a 3rd year student, she introduced herself around as "Deb" or "Debra" Chen. It is not uncommon for people from other cultures (especially Asian, it seems) to choose "American" names to make it easier to assimilate. (I guess that's why they do it.) I know several people who have done this.

This season, when she returned, she asked everyone to call her by her given name, Jing-Mei. Everyone seems to call her Chen. I heard Romano attempt to call her by her given name, only he messed it up. Only Carter really persists in calling her Deb.

Personaly, I think it is adorable that Carter still calls Jing- Mei "Deb"!

I would bet that Romano calling her "Jing" was intentional, with the way he always seems to be calling people names that they don't want to be called. (He calls Dr. Corday "Lizzie" and he called that desk clerk who did imitations "Andy" even though his name was Andrew.)

At first I didn't care that much for Deb but she's okay now. After I saw her in the reruns of Season 1, she didn't seem so bad. I think it would be neat for her and Carter to become better friends, since at one time they were both at the same stage in their careers (being med students.)

I loved it when Romano asked Luka if "Luka" meant "Lucky". And looked just looked at him and said very dryly, "No, Luke".
