About 700 Sierra Pacific customers lost power Tuesday afternoon in Reno when an underground vault overheated, causing a piece of electrical equipment to explode at about 2:35 p.m.
Bob Sagan, a Sierra Pacific spokesman, said the vault which houses underground electrical wires is near Smithridge Park. Reno firefighters responded to the incident, and work crews were in route late Tuesday afternoon to repair the problem.
Sagan said explosions of underground equipment typically occur when the weather first turns hot and the temperatures in the vaults rise. By 6:40 p.m., about 130 customers still were without power, Sagan said.
