I'm a Dancin' Fool

There are some songs that you can't stay still while listening to, whether you actually like the song or not. Mine is Cher's "Believe", what's yours?

That damn "Bye Bye Bye" song by the Backstreet Boys or N'SYNC or whoever it is. I can't help it! I'm going on a road trip next week and I had to be sure I made a cd with it on. I'm such a nerd.

-- Liz (lizstricklen@yahoo.com), June 02, 2000.

In the interest of living up to your "silly" forum standards I submit the following:

I just heard mine on SonicNet so it's still on my mind! "Never There" by Cake. It's a chair/car dancing song. I first heard it while trapped in a mini-van with my (then) 19 year old sister, 14 year old babysitter, 4 year old son, and my mom, on a 4 hour drive. (I'm 35.) My sister had somehow commandeered the stereo and was making me listen to hideous(sp?) music all day. I had never heard any of it before and hated most of it. I hated Cake at first. And then, by the end of the day I was asking for Cake again, and again. This particular song prompted me to invent a hand dance in my seat in the back of the van. It made everybody giggle. Now I can't help myself. Whenever I hear it I have to do the Dance. When in came on in my earphones a little while ago here at work, my hands crept up into the air and began the dance without my permission. Lucky for me no one walked by my cube at that very moment. :)

Almost anything by Will Smith, but particularly "Gettin' Jiggy Wit' It."

Quite embarrassing, I must say. Luckily Whit likes him so I could pretend I only bought the CD for my 8-year old son.

I also find that the only way to stay awake on long driving stations is by listening to the station that plays disco from the 80s ("Funkytown," anyone?), as I know all the words to all the songs and wiggle happily in my seat and pretend I'm not really that old.

It's gotta be the Pointer Sisters' 1976 remake of "Heaven Must Have Sent You!" God forbid I should ever have to stay in the hospital for a long time, but if I do, I'm going in with a "happy tape" of music that makes me smile like an idiot. This song will appear at least ten times.

-- Robert B. Dimmick (rbdimmick@earthlink.net), June 02, 2000.

The freaking Macarena. And I only know half the words.

And of course. That Spice Girls song...what is it?..."Tell Me What You Want" or something.

And anything by Pat Benetar.

-- Jackie (jackie@jackie.nu), June 02, 2000.

Much to my wife's embarassment, because I insist on diving into the dance whole hog, is the Dollar Wine song. ("Cent, five-cent, ten-cent, dollar!")

At the last Christmas party her work held, someone had a video camera. My talent is now recorded for posterity (or for whenever they need a good laugh during their lunch breaks.) Mind you, the Jamaican who works in her office told me "Dat's de best Dollar Wine dance I've ever seen!" so I must have done something right, besides throw my hips and back out.

"Just Like Heaven" by the Cure. And "Bizarre Love Triangle," the New Order version. Dancing my fool head off.

-- Heather Reilly (heather@reilly.net), June 02, 2000.

"Boogie on the Beach", by the Red Elvises, but only with my baby daughter. She loves to dance with me to that song, it makes her laugh like a goon...

-- Rob Rummel-Hudson (rhudson@digitalism.com), June 02, 2000.

Chumbawumba's Tubthumpin. Okay, yeah, I admit it, the Macarena too. Though I don't actually dance *the* Macarena. For dancing with my almost 2-year-old nephew, anything by Aerosmith.

-- Catherine (catcoicrit@earthlink.net), June 02, 2000.

Thanks Sarah. Now I'm jiggling in my seat just hearing "Never There" in my head. If I get fired I'm gonna hunt you down!

Really almost any Cake does it to me, also REM's "It's the End of the World as we Know It" and (cliched as it is) "I Will Survive".

-- Amanda (missdufour@hotmail.com), June 02, 2000.

"My Sharona," by The Knack. And "(Having a) Rave Up," also by The Knack.

Now I'm going to have them stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

-- Laura (lbhelfrich@yahoo.com), June 02, 2000.

Instanbul (Not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants. It's inexplicable, I know.

-- dora (dora@wordsdiminish.com), June 02, 2000.

O, if it's a song that I LIKE, defuinately They Might Be Giants' "Ana Ng"! I forgot about that one.

-- Kymm Zuckert (kymmz1@yahoo.com), June 02, 2000.

"What I like about you" by the Romantics does it to me. My sorority used to do this stupid little repeating dance to it and now whenever I hear the song I have to dance.

Same thing with 'You've lost that lovin' feeling'. I'm not sure if that's the actual title and I don't know the artist but I have to sing to that song. I've got another sorority memory of that song.

"I will Survive" is a good one too, and just about anything by Alanis Morissette too.

All She Wants to do is Dance, by Don Henley. Most jigs and reels. Most things played on a hammer dulcimer.

-- Colin (ethilrist@prodigy.net), June 02, 2000.

I was walking through a clothing store once and "Wishing Well" by Terrance Trent D'Arby came on. I couldn't walk without throwing my hips around. It was miserable.

-- Amy T. (als918@aol.com), June 02, 2000.

"Pretty in Pink". I love it. It may not be the best dancing song ever, but when that movie came out, I saw it in the theatre several times. And when it came out on video, I didn't have a VCR. But when I got a VCR, I got that movie on tape, and my sister and I watched it 40 something times, switching who we were going to quote, and punching each other when we said the wrong things. The worst (and best) part is it makes me dance like Molly Ringwald...and it's so incredibly fu

-- Allison (ali_smith@yahoo.com), June 02, 2000.

"Baby Got Back" or "White Lines" or "Ice, Ice Baby" or "Good Vibrations" or any of those early 90s dance songs that remind me college and of dancing like an idiot while wearing, say, a blazer and leggings and big silver hoop earrings. And black shoes with white socks.

-- Amy Lester (amy@petdance.com), June 02, 2000.

"It's Raining Men" by the Weathergirls, and of course, Miss Gaynor's "I Will Survive." I swear to GOD, I don't go out of my way to listen to disco!

Semi-related: I cannot drive and listen to Reggae at the same time. It makes me sway and bob, and I end up weaving all over the road.

-- Saundra (scrnwrtr1@home.com), June 02, 2000.

Stupid arm movements and body shaking while driving: All The Small Things by Blink 182

Dancing, hip-gyrating, gotta MOVE: Voodoo by Godsmack

I'm just odd.

-- Renee (justme@justme.org), June 02, 2000.

Tainted Love

More embarrassing than just the dancing- I have to sing along too...

-- Moira (profundum@yahoo.com), June 02, 2000.

Oh, yes indeedy, I am The Dancing Fool. Back in high school, my brother used to tease that I could probably dance to the sound of a can opener in operation. Uh huh!

"Can't help gettin' down wit' my bad self & busta move" songs are thus too numerous to name. Standouts include: "Take On Me" by a-Ha!, "you can ring my bell" by that coloratura freak whose name escapes me, "...Baby One More Time" by (cough) Britney Spears, "My Father's Eyes" by Eric Clapton, and "My Woman" by that one-hit wonder, White Something? White Town? Oh! Oh! And "Lovefool" by the Cardigans, and "Barbie" by Aqua!!

My shame is now complete. I'll just be slinking off...

-- Cameron (cameron@cimtegration.com), June 02, 2000.

"I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys fills me with an inexplicable joy and I have to do the herky-jerkiest Elaine-from- Seinfeld moves to it.

I blame it all on Funny Sally, who actually loves the Boys for her own reasons.

-- Anne (annegrrl@chickmail.com), June 02, 2000.

Lord, I could write a novel about this topic, since I like a lot of music. The song that comes to mind at the moment is "Into the Groove" by Madonna. That one always does it for me. I don't have a lot of good memories of high school, but the song reminds me how carefree it should have been.

And now everyone knows just how old I must be!

"ana ng and I aaarrre gettin' old and we STILL haven't WALKED in each other's MAJESTIC PRESENCE..."

Now it's totally trapped in my head. One of the best songs ever. Tappity tappity tappity. I'm bouncing in my seat now. Yay!

On the bad song front, it's "Copacabana" all the way for me. Those low chords ("They fell in LOVE..."), the melodrama, the cheese. I love it, and I have to do this gawd awful fake-merengue thing to it. Hip-shake, hip shake, twist, turn, fling the arm! "They fell in LOOOOOOVE...."

Have I mentioned that I'm a big dork?

-- Jen (maharishe@yahoo.com), June 03, 2000.

That's: "WALKED in the GLOW of each OTHer's maJESTic presence!"

"I don't want the world, I just want your half..."

-- Kymm Zuckert (kymmz1@yahoo.com), June 03, 2000.

"they don't NEED me HERE/and I KNOW you're there..."

Anyway. Okay, if you're going to be picky, you could say that it's actually

"WALKED in the GLOW of eachOTHer's maJESTIC presence..."

"Each" and "other" sort of mushes in together. It's true.

-- Jen (maharishe@yahoo.com), June 03, 2000.

Mambo --- augh! ---- Number ---- eck! ---- Five --- hewack.

I hate that song. But I have to leave the room when it plays or turn into a complete idiot.

-- Katharine (radix@ican.net), June 03, 2000.

"Get Down Tonight," by KC & the Sunshine Band. Yeah, baby.

-- Katie Trame (mrkite@apci.net), June 03, 2000.

Mambo #5 does it for me, too. I was in a pedestrian who got hit by a car (crossing the street) a few months back. The first time I went out in public without crutches was to a friend's sweet 16 party. Mambo #5 came up in the dance, and I managed to get up and move to it. (Dance wasn't quite the right word, since to call my walk at the time a limp is like calling Lake Michigan a puddle.)

-- Mike (geometricity@crosswinds.net), June 04, 2000.

Dora - I love that TMBG song as well! Actually as they're not that common over here I dance on principle whenever they come on (because if I jump around enough the DJ might actuallt think people like them).

At the moment the song in the charts that'll get me dancing is an Irish one, by a comdian ... 'Who's in the house? Jesus in the house! Who's in the house? Jesus in the house!' and 'With a hip-de- hop, with a hip-de-hop a hip-y-dee hop in a brand new cathoic way' I can't help myself it sounds like a marketing company told the Catholic Church that this would be a good way to connect with Irish youth.

Hey, I'm not proud at least I'm honest.

-- Caoimhe (just_s_b@yahoo.com), June 04, 2000.

since I've been dancing so much the last few years, when a lively song comes on at the end of a movie (and this is *in* the theater) I get up, start boogieing, and try and persuade others to join in. I'll admit that they usually don't.

Anita of Anita's BOD and Anita's LOL

-- Anita Rowland (anitar@halcyon.com), June 04, 2000.

"Sister Madly" by Crowded House ...

The first few notes alone make me want to go out and go for a long run, they're so energetic. Usually I settle for a good jumping around session in the appartment - to the great joy of my neighbors, I'm sure. This song is never, ever played on the radio, so I don't know if anyone else has ever even heard of it ...

-- Julie Schmied (juschmi@hotmail.com), June 05, 2000.

Ooo ... look at me posting to my first forum! I'm a complete virgin at this lark. But enough of me, to the songs! I have a lil group of em. Firstly it has to be It's Raining Men (by The Weather Girls) - love that song so much. Then stuff with camp with a dance routine - The Macerana and anything by Steps. I was on the train once listening to my walkman when all of a sudden I realised I was doing the Tragedy dance moves without realising.

-- Mathew D. O'Marah (fozzy@mdolive.com), June 05, 2000.

Sister Madly

Lyrics

Now you're heading down to get someone Should've done what he had to do years ago The position is coming through All the people that you're standing on All the people that you're standing on Now you're heading down to be someone Someone that you've seen in a magazine Your premonition is coming true Oh baby you're not so green No baby you're not so green No baby you're nutso

Sister madly waking up the dead You're systematically stepping on my head

-- Amanda Page (amanda@amandasprecipice.com), June 05, 2000.

Going into the convenience store downstairs always gets me going. I try not to, but I'm like the men in the dole line in The Full Monty. A few days ago it was "I Will Survive," which I resisted, then "Celebration" by KC & the Sunshine Gang and I was okay, but today was whoever's "She's a Brick House" and I was carried away by the sound like Steve Martin following the smoke in "Roxanne"--my mind siezed up around this song.

Perversely, long association with a Deadhead has corrupted whatever inability I had to dance ever before (minimal), and it looks particularly stupid to do the Peanuts-looking Dead Can't Dance grooving to club music.

-- Lisa Houlihan (lisa@penguindust.com), June 06, 2000.

Before posting the above I hadn't read contributions to this thread in a few days, I just boogied back into my cube sat down and started typing. "Tainted Love," ooo yes, and "What I Like about You" always and "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" absolutely! Also "Kiss of Life" by Peter Gabriel.

-- Lisa Houlihan (lisa@penguindust.com), June 06, 2000.

"I'll Melt with You, and Goody Goody Two Shoes by Adam Ant. Oh, and Benny Goodman's Sing Sing Sing. Couldn't not dance if there was literally a string tied to my toes and one little be-bop and bi-polar nuclear destruction would be my fault. I'd still dance. Make that double for Paul Simon's "The Obvious Child"

-- anonymously answered, June 07, 2000

"Hip Shake" by the Rolling Stones

-- Roger Bixby (rbix@earthlink.net), June 08, 2000.

I completely forgot this one - "Brand New Lover" by Dead or Alive. I become the biggest moron on the face of the planet when I hear that song. I've tested it by car, by party and by plane, and the results are that I am not allowed to listen to it in public...

-- Liz Stricklen (Lizstricklen@yahoo.com), June 10, 2000.

Thankfully it's not as embarassing as The Spice Girls or The Macarena, but..."Mustang Sally" always gets me dancing in my seat.

-- Jackie (jackie@jackie.nu), June 10, 2000.

Madonna's "Music" It rocks my world when I have to work all night long!

-- Bill "Big D!" Dawson (BillDawson@NCS.com), November 29, 2000.

Well I agree that most of the songs mentioned would indeed keep me from "Staying still". Anything by Cher, N'SYNC, the Backdoor Boys, or the Spice Girls would have me moving..........towards the POWER BUTTON in order to stop the excruciating sounds of such horrible "musicians", and I use the term lightly.

Liz nice question, but you ARE a nerd.

Deb, Getting Jiggy wid it?????? I would have assumed that you were 10 years old. Did you have your son at the age of 2?

Rob, if a Pointer Sister's song appreas 10 times on your little "Happy Tape", you will NOT have to smile like an "Idiot". That cat would have already been released from the bag. Everyone would already know.

Cameron, could you be more fickle. Slink away........far, far away.

Catherine, a pleasure to see a true american's point of view. AEROSMITH continues to rock!

As far as a song that I can't sit still to due to the fact that it is "enjoyable" well the subject line of this post speaks volumes............"I'm a Dancin' fool" by Frank Zappa.

-- Eric Zappa (eric@bluespeed.net), October 29, 2003.

Kymm,

Songs like Cher's "Believe" like Will Smith's "gettin Jiggy Wid It" Backstreet boys, Macarenta Mambo #5 and "Baby Got Back" all are songs I cannot stay still while listening to because I am either beating up the person that dared taint my sterou by pumping such abhorable Sounds out of my cherished system OR I am running screaming from the club that the music is being played at. Lets face it, this is not music to enjoy, it is music that men withstand (sometimes) because they are horny and want to try and get laid.

Personally I think it is Pathetic.

Eighties songs make me want to get up and puke. That is technically not staying still. Puking can be quite active and judging by some of the responses to this forum, were I to allow the vast majority of the responders to play DJ for a day I would be very busy hurling my way back to you babe...with a burning love insi----

So much R and B...so much time that could be better spent.

What works for me in a jump out of your seat whether you want to or not and tear up the living room dance floor?

Cherry Poppin Daddies Bosstones Frank Zappa

Hey maybe I am a Dancin Fool.
