MY asparagus plants have small seed pods on them does anyone know if these can be planted to produce new plants or do they have to be processed first?...........Thank you.........Jay

as far as i know you can plant the seeds but it takes quite awhile to get large enough plants to cut. try division instead, i would do this in fall, the plants need the ferns to get energy to grow next year,so do not cut them off. good luck

Jay, just watch the seed pods until they get good and ripe (generally leave them on as long as possible). Then go ahead and plant them. Asparagus can be transplanted, but I prefer to plant in place. You might have a hybrid variety, in which case you might not have the greatest success. Used to be that people claimed planting from seed would get you too many female plants as opposed to the preferable male plants. I believe there's been a study done that disproves that. Anyway, we just snuck one last meal out of our from-seed asparagus patch and it was just fine. Gerbil

We've grown asparagus from seed, but the seedlings are TINY -- I would suggest putting them in a nursery bed for a couple of years.
