Alternative to Ac in non electric homes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

This came from a friend-is this possible?

"Does anybody know of someone who has hooked up a Thermo-King refer unit from an 18-wheeler freight trailer then plumbed it into the existing duct work of a mobile home to use as a non-electric air conditioner? I have been kicking this idea around in the back of my mind for some time. Mobile homes can get quite warm in the summer time!"

Would like more information or links or references if anyone has them. Thanks!

Eric, this is my husband's department, not mine. But he says "Sure". Going to need a diesal engine to power it. And you'll have a choice of 32F or peoplesicle for temps, but doable.

In the meantime, paint your roof white, grow vines up it, consider building an open-sided shed over it, put window tinting or reflectorized covers on the sunny windows. You can also hang coarsely woven fabric (burlap) in the upwind winds. Keep the bottom of the fabric in a pan of water put in the window sill. Works as a non-electric swamp cooler. Gerbil

I absolutely LOVE no-electric hints. Someday I hope to cut this umbilical cord to nuclear power plants. Don't know what to do about this computer though.

hello, i work in the trucking business and i am intimately farmilar with what we call " reefer units". you certainly could, but you will find they are heavy and that they will use an average of 1 gallon of diesel fuel per hour. most can maintain any temperature you select from +70 degrees to -20 degrees. they will also heat, as some freight needs to be kept at around 60- 70 degrees, and will freeze right down to -20 degrees to keep ice cream frozen solid (ice cream begins to thaw out at zero degrees)

good luck and let us know how it works out. personally if i were to go to this extent of time trouble and $$$$$$ i would get a unit like the motels use for each room, and a generator. this would cost less to purchase and to operate. you have no idea what it costs to maintain and repair a reefer unit :)
