BEIRUT (Reuters) - A Lebanese military court sentenced a man to one year in jail for calling on people to celebrate the death of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, a judicial source said Wednesday.

The source said the sentence on Salah Mehdi Nour Ed-Din, which could be appealed, was passed Friday, six days after Assad died of a heart attack.

The man was convicted of insulting behavior.

Syria is the main power broker in Lebanon and has 35,000 troops stationed there. Lebanon observed seven days of official mourning after his death.
