Suggestion for the town-bound (Book)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I know a lot of folks who come here are stuck in a city or town. I was too for a while. It seems sometimes that you'll never get out and there isn't much you can do in the meantime. So trot down to your library and request The Integral Urban House by the Farrallones Institute (Sierra Club Books, 1979) through inter-library loan. These people were (are?) some serious urban homesteaders. They raised livestock including bees, rabbits and fish. They used solar heat, and conservation. Their whole set-up was designed to recycle and conserve as best as possible. They also deal with neighbors and city ordinances. I think you'll be able to find some inspiration in the book. Gerbil

Kathy, There is hope. Let's see if I can get this barely watched and barely remembered episode of a TV show down. A little girl had brought her pet sheep to show in the big city. Then she discovered (I think) that the sheep were to be butchered. So she took off with her pet. She ended up at a bus station. They ended up giving the sheep a poodle clip (THAT I remember, it was hysterical) and claiming the little girl was blind and the sheep was her seeing eye dog, which of course could ride home on the bus when a pet sheep couldn't. The book looked interesting so I did a little search at

http://www.abebooks.com/

and found it is available. Prices range from 8.95 >> UP.

Just in case getting a library loan isn't possible.
