snake eggs???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I live in East Tenn. and have raised beds (with no sides), for my garden. This morning I went out to dig the rest of my potatoes and noticed some white things that looked like jelly beans. After looking at them closer, I noticed they were eggs and were very rubbery and not hard shelled like a bird egg. Of course I picked them up not even thinking they could have been snake eggs!!! yuck. Are snake eggs rubbery? We also have small lizards. Do they lay eggs? I found 9 total. Do snakes lay eggs this time of year? Thanks for any response.

Annie, snakes do lay eggs this time of year. The eggs could also be those of the lizards or of box turtles. I guess you could re-bury them in a glass container with a cover that lets air in and wait to see what hatches. If it is something you don't want you could always dispose of them then.

Thanks Green for responding! Needless to say, the first thing I thought about were copperheads! Black snakes I can tolerate. I asked my father and father-in-law, but they had no idea. You'd think after 153 years total of life experience, they could have told me something. hee hee. But, my father-in-law found this great web page for me which explained it. If anyone else is interested or comes upon these eggs, this info is helpful...http://wildwnc.org/natnotes/unearthly.html also, didn't know that poisiounous snake babies are born "live", not as eggs. Helpful info around here, for sure.

I have large pots of flowers on my deck (that is 16ft. off the ground) and each summer my lizards lay "rubbery" eggs in them. Several weeks later we have hunderds of small lizards running all over! The bug population drops greatly after this. I think the jar Idea is great! Good luck and be sure to "post" when you find out!post"
