Electrical Failure Shuts Down Nuclear Reactor Source: Seattle Post-Intelligencer Publication date: 2000-06-27

The only commercial nuclear power plant in the Northwest shut down automatically yesterday morning because of an electrical failure. Workers were trying to determine what caused the reactor to "scram" at the Columbia Generating Station, formerly known as the Washington Public Power Supply System's Plant 2.

No one was hurt when the 1,200-megawatt plant's turbine tripped and shut down. It was at full power.

It was unclear how long the outage would last, but Energy Northwest, the public utility consortium that owns the plant, said crews would use the time to do some maintenance.

The plant had been operating continuously for 245 days.
