LI'S croaky voice and season 4?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

Has anyone else noticed this? I've noticed that kerry weaver/laura innes speaks with a croaky voice? I think she's great but why is her voice croaky? It was just a weird thought i had the other day. Also does anyone know if sky1 or channel 4 will be showing episodes from season 4? I really want to get ambush and exodus on tape. Thanks!

Hah, I noticed that Kerry's voice just sounded a little funny when she was mad. Like when she was yelling at someone, but normally I haven't noticed it.

Laura Innes has a hypernasal voice. That means that vocal sounds which should come through her mouth are being partially passed through her nose. No idea as to the underlying reason, but her soft palate is not closing to cut off the nasal cavity. Which goes under the "more than you all ever wanted to know" category ;^D

Could it have anything to do with her having a trach when she was a toddler? Just asking...

That would relate to hypernasality only if it somehow damaged the nerves responsible for movement of the pharyngeal wall (back of the throat) or raising of the soft palate. Her trach should have done nothing more than provide an airway into the trachea, which is well below the larynx (voice box) and far below the soft palate.

At least it makes her voice very distinctive when she says "Previously on ER." She and Elizabeth, IMO, have the most recognizable voices at the beginning.

Actually, I cannot remember the source, but I remember some article making fun of the fact that even though ER is in Chicago, no one on the show has a nasally, midwest voice except Kerry Weaver, which is kind of true. Though, people in the midwest don't sound as typically "midwestern" as Kerry, and I wouldn't want Carter or Mark to sound like that either.

Maybe she has a cleft palate.
