Carla Emery's 10th Edition!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

This is for those of you who love Carla Emery's Old Fashioned Recipe Book. I was on her site (www.carlaemery.com/index.html). She needs people to let her know what items they received the most use of and would like to see in her revised 10th edition. I emailed her that I would just love to have her book in a hardback copy, even if most of the copies were printed in paperback that some could be the DELUXE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION. Oh,and to let COUNTRYSIDE AND SMALL STOCK JOURNAL know when it finally comes out because these folks think highly of her book. The following is her emailed response to me.

Dear Pamela, Thanks for all the nice things you said! The 10th edition is going to be at least another year or two coming. I decided to go back and do a major rewrite and upgrade on top of the rewrite and uprade I had already done. If it should happen to become available in the U.S. (current plans are to publish overseas) I am sure the word will get out. I will definitely be producing a hardcover version for the overseas market. Sasquatch Books holds the current U.S. hardcover rights. I have always wanted to have a hardcover version but the publisher has never chosen to produce one. One can only speculate as to his reasons. So far, he has declined to purchase and publish my 10th edition for the U.S. marketplace. Since it has been a year since I offered it to him, I expect this to continue to be true.

CSSJ Family, my copy is new but from what I understand these books are being loved to death. Who wouldn't sacrifice just a little more to purchase a sturdier copy.(give the paperback to one the kids - smile) I'm just bothered that Sasquatch Books isn't even giving U.S. citizens the opportunity to purchase (yes, even in paperback) the anniversary edition that will be offered overseas. Here is the info. from the '94 edition of her book. Contact these people and let them know how you feel (not just on the forum).

I love her book, bought one for us & also our children. We were able to meet Carla at a y2k meeting in Topeka, Ks. this last year. She is such a great lady, also! Thank you for the information! Sonda in Ks.

I fired off an email at the publisher -- quite upset, as I am a HUGE fan of Carla Emery. Here's what I got back (within minutes, I might add!) -- Please note that the way my email program is set up -- the answer comes first -- the text of my original email is lower down.

Tracy,

Thanks for your letter. Sasquatch has not declined to publish a 10th edition. We have enough inventory of the 9th edition to carry us for a year or more. The demand for the book soared pre-Y2K and we overstocked a bit. It would be foolish to write off as many copies as we have. I agree with everything you say about the books value, and we look forward to working with Carla again on a future edition. Best,

Through a homesteading forum that I am a member of I have heard that you own the rights to Carla Emerys Encyclopedia of Country Living. I have also heard that a tenth edition is planned and you have declined to make it available in North America.

I would just like to say that you seem to be ignoring a pretty large portion of the market. This is one of the Bibles of homesteading, and as it seems that there is a whole new generation out there making plans for moving to the country, with no particular skills for it, just the need and determination, I think that the decision your organization has made may be wrong.

I already have a copy of the Encyclopedia. It is old and tattered, taped and stapled in places. The pages are worn from years of reading for reference and pleasure. Carla has guided me through many prospective mistakes to victory.

I ask that you please reconsider the decision to not publish for the North American market. I would also go further, and ask that you publish the tenth edition as a hardcover book. The paperback supplies all of the information with none of the durability that a publication of this popularity requires to withstand years of constant use.

I, for one, would buy a copy. And I am very sure that many of my online, homesteading friends would be right behind me with wallets open. As a publisher, Im not sure that you can appreciate the fact that this book is such an incredible resource, and one of the few that we homesteaders trust and return to regularly.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Tracy, That was a wonderful email/letter you presented to Sasquatch Books. And I'm pleased at their quick response. Although, his note initially seems encouraging. The tone is calming and reassuring sounding, he hasn't said anything specific about the upcoming 10th ed.(25th anniversary volume). Just a vague...looking forward to working with her on a new edition...a new edition could be the 13th. Perhaps I'm not trusting enough of others if things aren't spelled out just right. But I am glad you had the good sense to go right to Sas. Bks. I was so stunned by Carla's reply that I came here first. Here's to hoping that they sell a lot of books in the next year. Othewise, I'll just have to figure out who I need to contact for a copy of the hardback overseas publication of this great book. Hope to hear more on this as I prefer hardback.

That is such a shame and waste that Sasquatch is decling to do a hardcover 10th edition and a 25th anniv. too boot! Well... guess we'll have to import it. Carla is one dynamite lady who was our houseguest a few yrs ago when she was writing her book, "Secret, Don't Tell." Sorry I could not underline:) She so inspired me and her encylopedia along with Countryside was my saving grace when we had to "pioneer" it after we bought our land. We had nothing but 35 acres with a tobacco barn on it. I had never lived before without electricity and modern conviences... needless to say this experience transformed me. I only hope that this situation will change. Bernice

Gee, my copy of her book is one she self-published and was held together with a ring! I met her at the fairgrounds at Monroe a number of years ago. She was just the nicest person! I went out and bought a $30 copy later just so I could support her, but I like the old self- published version the best!

btw, Sasquatch is usually a pretty good publishing house...

Guys- always remember that the internet is a wonderful thing - we can always go overseas and order the book and have it shopped to the US. Don't need Sasquatch books at all.
