dot com choices

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ASTRUC : One Thread

hi sara. it's sean (of vision and ink)... i have a question regarding the purchase of a dot com. i have my eye on ink-dot.com ... but should i make the jump from being hosted to actually owning one. i love the name. i like the idea of freedom. so what should i do? is it worth 70 dollars for the name and 100 dollars a year for hosting (that's the deal i have found! 200 mb too. good... eh?)... let me know what your dot whateva experience is.

If it's worth $70 to have your own name, go for it. and being hosted sure beats having to get & maintain all the equipment yourself.

It's like a vanity plate - if you think it's worth it, why not?

Sean,

That's a kick-ass domain name. You might want to think about registering it and having it point to your existing web site, which would be cheaper than actually hosting the domain. I like register.com for these sort of services. They have really easy set-up.

My advice is, don't pay $70 to register it. I use Dotster, and it is only $15 to buy a domain name for a year. Now that network solutions has announced that they own all domains and we just rent them from Network Solutions, they aren't the best place to register.

Is it worth it? Totally. It is great fun to own your own domain. I should warn you though, it is thoroughly addicting - once you own a domain, you want more. Between my husband and I, we own about 40. So far.
