Where can I buy a solar operated fountain for a small pond?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I want to make a small garden pond in the back yard. I saw on Christopher Lowell's television show (Discovery channel) almost a year ago an episode about garden ponds in which he used a small solar powered disk which would shoot water into the air about two feet. This was strictly for small decorative pools. I have tried to find them, but have only been able to find them available in Great Britain where they are called Solar Islands. I don't know if that is the brand name or just a generic name. Is anyone familiar with these and where I can find them? I believe they were somewhere in the price range of $25-$50.

The one at Gardener's Supply (http://www.gardeners.com/ sell.asp?ProdGroupId=12924), although I like it and may end up buying it, it is not the same kind that I am looking for. The one I have in mind, floats on the water. It may be more expensive than $50 since the British sights show them being more. The one I have in mind or is similar to may be seen at http://www.mayabooks.ndirect.co.uk/ mayasolar_lampslanterns.html. It is called Solar Island.

Hi-I got mine from Backwoods Solar in Sandpoint Idaho. It can be hooked directly to a 12 volt system as mine is or powered from small PV panels which they also sell. I attached a fountain head to mine and it works fine. It was $22. Their phone is 208-263-4290 or Email info@backwoodssolar.com or Website www.backwoodssolar.com

Hope this helps.

I've been extremely impressed by Bob and Ray at energyoutfitters.com. They are located here in the Rogue Valley, in Southwest Oregon, and they both live way out, off the grid, and USE what they sell.

I too am looking for a solar island fountain. I don't want one that has to hook up to anything. Just the sun for energy. I have not been able to find one for under $99.00 plus shipping. If I get one from Canida, how do you do the money exchange? Jae

I found this plus a few other complaints I'm thinking twice before purchasing.

Hi Tom, I have bought three solar powered floating fountian disks. I bought them at Smith and Hawkins . Unfortunately all of them broke. They simply just quit for no apparent reason. When I returned them to Smith and Hawkins they said they had a small warehouse full of the returned floating style solar disk fountains. They did say that they have had much more success with the solar panel style fountain heads. I found them to be extremely light sensitive. Even the shade from my hand over the photo light cell stopped the fountain from working. The floating solar disk fountain was about 80.00 The solar panel connected to a standard submersable pump and fountain head ran in the 115.00 range. I wish mine worked, I gave it a try on 3 occasions. The company that supplied the solar fountains to Smith and Hawkins is out of Germany.
